West Elementary Weekly Update
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Fourth quarter progress reports are going home next Friday, April 17. Our focus for this final quarter of the school year is “Getting Prepared for the Next Grade Level.” We want every student to push toward the expectations of the grade they will enter in the fall. Please encourage your child to finish the year strong. If you are unclear about where your child stands academically, please message your child’s teacher.
There are many opportunities for students to catch up if they are behind. In math, we utilize My Path, a digital platform that analyzes student strengths and weaknesses to provide personalized steps toward mastering grade-level standards. Reading and writing growth require consistent practice, which can be done anywhere. We ask that you encourage your child to read simple books or write at home whenever possible. Your support and encouragement go a long way in their success.
Academic Shout Outs
Fourth Grade
Mrs. Goeken’s class recently took a quiz on comparing decimals. The class earned an average score of 76%, and 11 students achieved a score of 80% or higher. This shows that the majority of the class has a solid grasp of how to determine the value of different decimals.
Mrs. Kanallakan’s class averaged 75% on their quiz regarding the relationship between decimals and fractions. In this class, 15 students scored 80% or higher, demonstrating a strong ability to convert and connect these two mathematical concepts.
i-Ready My Path Support
To help your child prepare for rigorous classroom assessments, please encourage them to complete i-Ready My Path lessons at home for at least ten minutes per day. We recommend checking in to ensure they are passing their lessons. You can access My Path using these steps:
- Have your child sign into their Google Account (the same login used for their Chromebook).
- Go to portal.altonschools.org

ROAR Volunteers
We are seeking more volunteers for our R.O.A.R. (Reach Out and Read) program. To participate, you must complete a volunteer application and come to the school at 7:30 am to listen to our students read. Please enter through the front door near the office to sign in. Do not use the student entrance when arriving to volunteer. Your time helps our students build vital literacy skills.
April Tier One Updates
The Referral Free Reward for April is Extra Recess. As March concludes, please talk to your children about making good choices and being responsible, respectful, and safe. Currently, 17 out of our 433 students have referrals. Please encourage your child to follow all school rules so they can earn the Extra Recess reward at the end of the month.
District Scorecard Progress
This week, we are sharing our progress on the District Improvement Plan regarding two specific goals:
Goal 1: Increase the percentage of students with perfect attendance weeks. Consistent attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. We continue to recognize students who show up every day ready to learn.
Goal 3: Increase the percentage of students passing every class. Our staff is providing targeted support to ensure every student has the opportunity to master grade-level standards.
Thank you for emphasizing the importance of daily attendance and academic effort.
