Happy First Week of School! Important Updates & Reminders from West

Posted Date: 08/21/26 (03:00 PM)

Dear West Families,

We made it through our first full week of school! We are so happy to have our students back in the building. Our main focus this week was establishing rules and routines so that every child knows what to expect and feels supported for a successful year ahead.

Upcoming i-Ready Reading Diagnostic
Next week, students will complete their baseline reading assessments through i-Ready. These initial diagnostic tests are essential—they provide us with a snapshot of where your child is starting academically so we can tailor our instruction to meet their unique learning needs and track their growth throughout the year.

First Quarter Reward: Walk to the Park
Mark your calendars! Our first-quarter reward trip is scheduled for October 23rd. To earn a spot on the walk to the park, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Maintain zero behavior referrals
  • Turn in all required schoolwork
  • Consistently demonstrate our RRSK expectations
Permission slips will go home early next week and are due back by Friday, September 4th. Please note that returning a permission slip reserves a spot, but final attendance depends on students maintaining their eligibility leading up to the event.

Gilson-West Spirit Wear
Show your school pride! On Fridays, we wear RED—and lots of it—to celebrate our amazing school, community, and city. If you need to pick up some new gear, you can browse and purchase items directly through our online store: Gilson-West Spirit Wear Store.

Thank you for a wonderful start to the school year, and have a great weekend!
