Running Redbirds (Read, Write, and Run) Sign-Up

Currently one third of children do not exercise properly, eat right or receive the motivation at home to become physically fit. If this trend continues it will have long-term ramifications for our health care system. To help with this growing problem, we have created the West Elementary Running Redbirds. The Running Redbirds program will begin October 7th by training for the Read, Right and Run Marathon on April 10th, 2027 in Forest Park.
The Read, Right, & Run Marathon® was launched in 2001 and quickly gained national recognition as the country’s only fully integrated marathon for children. The Read, Right & Run Marathon’s goal is to develop reading proficient, physically fit and community minded children by challenging them to READ 26 books, RIGHT the community with 26 good deeds, and RUN 26.2 miles over a six-month period. It is a standards-based, sustainable enrichment program that endorses and supports existing school curriculum. All of that hard work culminates each year when the K-5 students run their final 1.2 miles at the Go! St. Louis Family Day in Forest Park on April 10th. More than 15,000 area students have accepted the challenge since the program was established.
Participants are required to keep a journal of the books they read, the good deeds they do and the miles they run. Practices will be after school on Wednesdays from 2:30 - 3:30 on the West track. A schedule will be passed out at the first practice on October 7th. Participants must attend at least one practice a month to be a Running Redbird.
There is a $40.00 entry fee to participate in the Read Right Run Marathon in April. The entry fee provides the participants with their journal, an event t-shirt, bib number, goody bag and medal should they finish the program on April 10th in Forest Park. Only those students who complete all the requirements will be allowed to finish the program at the Read, Right, & Run Marathon. Registration is online and a link will be provided at the first practice. No money is due at this time. Further details will be emailed before October 7th.
